This is the dry season in this part of Ecuador. We have not seen rain since the end of June and may not see it again until mid-September in a month's time. That is nice for holidaying! But the inevitable incendios (bush or forest fires) are becoming a very real hazard and a very real risk to us and others. This fire on the slopes of Ilalo started this morning and very quickly swept up the mountain, fanned by the customary afternoon winds. It is probable that this fire resulted from sparks carried from a most spectacular fire, worryingly close to us, which started yesterday evening and was not put out by the bomberos (fire and rescue service) until this early morning, even using a water-carrying helicopter. Our 'new' house is situated right beside and on top of a deep gorge, full of tinder-dry timber and dead vegetation. If a spark were to arrive there .........!
